Today’s blog post is about a recent video I posted up to Youtube. It talks about how to describe what someone is wearing in French. If you want to be able to do that, then this video will help you out.

This blog post will help you learn the French verb “porter” which means “to wear”. You will also hear the verb “to wear” or “porter” conjugated in the present tense for all pronouns. Hearing the pronunciation is crucial for being able to speak fluently, and if you intend to describe what clothing another person has on, then it’s important to speak in a way that other Francophones can understand.

The final part of the video goes through some basic articles of clothing and gives you the pronunciation of these clothes in French, along with a sample sentence for each one. By the end of this video, you’ll be able to grasp the basics of describing what someone is wearing in French.

Being able to describing people’s appearance, especially when it comes to what they are wearing, requires some skill, and practice in learning to pronounce the words well. After all, what good is knowing a bunch of vocabulary if you cannot communicate it to people who speak the language?

So first of all, to describe the clothing that someone is wearing you need only ask yourself a few questions:
  • What is it they are wearing?
  • What color is the clothing that they are wearing?
  • What material might the clothing be made of?
  • Is there a pattern to the clothing?
To describe the clothing, you need to take note of physical characteristics. In this blog post, the video describes only the article of clothing and the color. Another blog post is in the works that talks about the other aspects of clothing, described above. Have fun and watch more than once. The key to speaking well is practice, practice, practice.
